The Immune System

Your immune system controls your quality of life

“The major function of the immune system is to protect the host from environmental agents such as microbes or chemicals, thereby preserving the integrity of the body.” (Pubmed.com)

There Are Two Major Subsystems of Your Immune System

Innate Immune System

The dominant system of defense. Its defenses are non-specific, responding to pathogens in a generic way and stressed cells send out alarm signals. This system does not confer long-lasting immunity against a pathogen.

Adaptive Immune System

Also referred to as the acquired immune system, is composed of specialized, systemic cells and processes that eliminate pathogens by preventing their growth.

Acquired immunity creates immunological memory after the initial response to a specific pathogen. This leads to an enhanced response to subsequent encounters with that pathogen. This process of acquired immunity is the basis of vaccination.
